This is Wee Claire, resident science fiction geek and movie fan - and here's her Wee Guide To American Gods. Imagine that, based on the power of belief, that gods and mythological creatures could walk amongst us – old gods like Odin or Loki and the new guard like the god of drugs, technology or even celebrity. This is the basic idea behind American Gods. The TV series is based on the 2001 Neil Gaiman novel of the same name and if his name sounds familiar it’s because he’s responsible for an array of works including The Sandman comic book series. Bryan Fuller and Michael Green serve as showrunners – Fuller is responsible for TV shows like Hannibal and Green is responsible for writing screenplays like Logan and Blade Runner 2049 - so we’re in good hands. The story revolves around a man called Shadow Moon who’s just spent three years in prison. He’s been released a little earlier because his wife Laura has just been killed and on his way to the funeral, he meets a strange man called Wednesday who wants to hire him as a bodyguard. And I’m going to leave it there because you need to watch the rest of the series to find out more. American Gods is stunning. The first episode is beautiful and confusing all at once and the characters are completely intriguing and utterly terrifying as well. You’ll recognise ex-Hollyoaks actor Ricky Whittle as Shadow Moon who’s supported by a fantastic cast including Emily Browning and Ian McShane amongst others.
