He logged over 5,000 hours of flying, 4,800 hours of jet time, 200 carrier landings. The thing that I most remember about him is that he is one of two humans that went to the Moon twice." 9. Various of coffin being carried out of church STORYLINE: Friends and family members remembered Captain Gene Cernan, who died last week at age 82, during a funeral service held for the former astronaut in Houston on Monday. Cernan is remembered as the last person to walk on the Moon. The service was held at St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston. A private burial with full military honors was scheduled for later in the day at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin. Cernan died last week at a Houston hospital of a variety of ailments.
