Jordan Peterson lectures on phenomenology, the philosophical study of the structures of experience and consciousness. As opposed to the modern materialistic viewpoint that views consciousness as a secondary by-product of fundamentally material processes, phenomenology places consciousness at the center of being. In this lecture, Dr. Peterson argues that the mystery and complexity of consciousness should prompt us to engage in an intellectual exercise by flipping our viewpoint of what might constitute the fundamental reality. Above all, Dr. Peterson emphasizes the importance of the quality of our experience and the moral responsibility built into our very being with regards to our intentions and the choices we make that affect not only our experience - or "being" ("dasein") - but the experience of others.
In virtue of their focus on personal 'lived' experience, phenomenological approaches are powerful for gaining insights into people’s inner world, motivations and actions, and cutting through bias and the clutter of taken-for-granted assumptions and conventional wisdom about ourselves (Eigenwelt), others (Mitwelt) and the world (Umwelt). When we do away with our 'rational' and reductionistic a priori perceptions that lock us into a cage reflecting our own sterile preconceptions, we begin to see the possibilities that lie beyond our limited vision - we begin to be 'alive' agents free of lifeless ideologies. When we operate in this dynamic 'being,' possibility shines forth with meaning, and it is when we follow this meaning, that true 'being' begins.
