On the second weekend of December in 2016, the Dumont Museum outside Sigourney, Iowa, held its annual "Train Days" event. I visited the museum on December 11, and took some video of the many operating O scale trains running here, on two separate layouts. This was the first time I visited the museum in 9 years, and a lot has changed since then! My video begins on the first layout in the museum lobby, which visitors see upon entering. This layout has several trains running on a multi-track mainline, along with a few smaller loops and a large mountain. It resembles a more classic toy-like O gauge setup, made up of tubular "O" gauge track and traditional accessories, although many modern trains are running as well under Lionel Legacy command control.
Entering the actual museum (beginning at the 1:50 mark) I was met with a surprise - ANOTHER train layout that I really knew nothing about. The last time I was here in 2007, none of this existed. Not only was this another O scale layout, but incredibly huge, one of the biggest I've ever seen. Unlike the lobby layout, this one has a more realistic, "hi-rail" appearance, with scale track & switches, and highly detailed trains. From what I could tell, most of the locomotives on this layout were MTH, operating under the DCS command system. As I walk around, you'll see just how many trains were running at any given time, ranging from modern diesels to classic steam engines, and several interesting consists. The layout itself features long mainline straight-a-ways, towns, and a gigantic mountain range with two bridges connecting them. What a sight this was to see! I left with many inspirations for my future train layout, which I hope to get started soon in my basement, perhaps over winter.
