Reason For A Change...
So for the last few months I have been looking into how I can make my Leopard Gecko’s enclosures as natural as possible. I have read many books and articles about the benefits of using natural ingredients as supplements to mimic how geckos may get their essential supplements in the wild. Since vitamin D3 comes from the sun, and can only be replicated in supplements as a synthetic ingredient, I needed a more natural way of my gecko getting vitamin D3 in her system, so the light was the answer!
I would also like to say that from what I have seen and read, Arcadia have done an incredible amount of research in order to create a safe and effective light for crepuscular species such as Leopard Geckos. As I said in the video, I am still not fully sold on all light. So many people buy any old light from a shop - sometimes ones suited for reptiles such as Bearded Dragons, despite them having very different light recommendations, compared to leos. Also I find a lot of people leave the lights on all the time, do not monitor the temperatures and do not provide enough hides. Additionally, Photo-kerato-conjunctivitis poses a real threat to reptiles and amphibians when the incorrect lighting is used.
I pride myself on having an open mind, and the ability to adjust my views on things when the relevant evidence is put forward. I would also like to point out that the synthetic way of supplementing my Geckos has worked fine for almost a decade, and there’s nothing wrong with using vitamin and mineral powders which contain D3. The one setback is that if you’re not careful you can overdose your reptiles on certain vitamins (I’ve never experienced it personally but I know it can happen), whereas with the natural way of doing things, you cannot overdose the geckos on the Earth Pro-A, and the gecko can regulate its own vitamin D3 intake. Anyway, we will soon see whether this has had much of an impact on my gecko. I’ll keep you posted!
