Written By Music Theatre of Denton on Friday, Apr 01, 2016 | 09:38 AM

Book by Quiara Alegria Hudes, Music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the Tony-Award winning writer of current Broadway sensation Hamilton. The second show of MTD’s 31st season of producing high-quality musical theatre in the Metroplex, In the Heights takes the audience to the vibrant streets of Washington Heights, a neighborhood of New York City. A place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the sounds of three generations of music. It’s a community on the brink of change - full of hopes, dreams, and pressures; where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you and which ones you leave behind. A stunning score filled with hip-hop and Latin American rhythms set the tone for this one-of-a-kind musical that won Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Choreography, and Best Orchestration in 2008. This production is directed and choreographed by Rebecca McDonald, with Audrey Keen as the assistant director. Music Direction is provided by John Norine, Jr, and assisted by Benjamin Brown. Jason Joos is the Production Stage Manager. In the Heights is produced by Music Theatre of Denton’s Managing Director, David K. Pierce. The cast of In the Heights consists of many new faces to the Campus Theatre: Jose Ocampo III won the role of Usnavi, a character originated by the playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda in the original Broadway production. Meagan Black, fresh off her stellar run of “Wednesday Addams” in MTD’s October 2015 sold-out hit The Addams Family returns as Usnavi’s love interest, Vanessa. Van Aldstyne native Natalia Botello plays Nina Rosario while Michael Ramirez plays her father, Kevin - the owner of the local taxi company. The role of Benny, a young employee of Kevin’s who dreams of more will be played by Jadyn Tchandja. Returning MTD alumni are Anthony Ortega (Les Miserables, Into the Woods) as the Piragua Guy, Sienna Riehle (Into the Woods) as Daniela, and Tommy Toliver (The Wedding Singer) as Graffiti Pete. The role of the lottery winning grand-matriarch Abuela Claudia, is played by Sheiliann Peña. Rounding out the principals are Daniela Ruelas as Carla, Vinnie Serionel as Sonny, and Natalia Borja as Camilla. Alessandra Aguilar, Michael Alonzo, Makaela Dickerson, Gabriel Ewegbeje, Priscilla hatcher, Tatiana John, Chelcie Parry, Jacob Rodriguez, Nicole Romero, Kelsey Solis, Kelsey Solis, and Deborah Valcin make up the residents of Washington Heights.
