Belen, Iquitos, Peru (December, 2015)

 

Belen is known as both a neighborhood -- one of the poorest in South America -- and perhaps the most unique market in the world. I've been fortunate enough to have explored this huge jungle market in Iquitos Peru on the Amazon River many times as well as walked through Lower Belen to get a taste of life that few ever have a chance to experience. I've talked with the people who live and work here, visited their homes, played football (soccer) and volleyball with them, and even shared Christmas with poor yet generous families whose hospitality is tremendous. While I don't recommend walking through the market or Lower Belen alone because of the danger of theft and even possibly even assault, going with a group or even a reputable guide is something every visitor to should Iquitos should experience. It is a place unlike any other. The people there are quick to smile and talk with strangers. While only once or twice have I ever felt concerned for safety, I'm frequently warned by the people there to be careful in specific places or around certain people.
