(23 Aug 1997) T/I 11:09:29 A controversial proposal to distribute free heroin to terminally ill addicts in Denmark has sparked fierce debate. The move is the latest in a series of controversial experiments involving heroin across Europe. In Switzerland, police allowed drug addicts to inject themselves in one area of Zurich, known as "Needle Park", because city officials decided it was better to keep the problem concentrated in one area. However, after five years of turning a blind eye to pushers and addicts who gathered in the area, under a bridge by a disused railway line, police moved to close it down because of complaints from local residents.
