Sesame Street - Block Party Prep (1969)

From 1969, Susan (Loretta Long) is cooking in the kitchen for her and Gordon's (Matt Robinson) dinner with Bob (Bob McGrath) and Mr. Hooper (Will Lee). A letter asking her to sing at tonight's block party changes her plans and brings out Bob's silly side. Originally aired in five parts. CLICK ON SHOW MORE FOR INFO AND LINKS! Questions about this delightfully sexist sketch (love how Bob and Hooper are wearing floral aprons): How was Susan going to make dinner when the beans had to soak overnight? And why even bother to make dinner when they're eating at the party?! Bless her, but I think they must have eaten out a lot ;-) Such a truly hideous "meal" they concoct. Too bad Oscar wasn't invited, he'd have loved it! The scenes end with Gordon complaining, "Okay, so I can't cook! I'd like to see you teach high school science sometime!" Mr. Hooper asks what he studied today, and Gordon looks to the camera and says, "Monkeys." Which leads to Joe Raposo singing George Gershwin's "Funny Face" over a live-action film of monkeys (linked below). Clever dig at the boys and their useless help in the kitchen. To see how Susan cleaned up for the party, check out +Sesame Maniac's video of the whole thing, including the Anything Muppets singing "Brotherhood of Man", Susan's "Draw Me a Circle", and the actual voice of Caroll Spinney announcing two of the sponsors and the book read on the show ("Look At Me" by Marguerita Rudolph).
