Britain's Queen Elizabeth began the formal part of her historic
state visit to post-apartheid South Africa on Monday (20/3). A
21-gun salute boomed out across Cape Town Harbour as the Queen was
met by the South African President Nelson Mandela. The Queen and
Mandela inspected a 96-man naval guard of honour before the two
South African anthems, Nkosi Sikelel' IAfrika (God Bless Africa)
and the old Afrikaans anthem Die Stem (The Voice), were played.
Mandela was accompanied by his niece, 26-year-old Rochelle
Mtirara. The Queen met South Africa's first black leader at
the Victoria and Alfred waterfront .
