STORYLINE
Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said on Monday she had taken steps to try to defuse a potential crisis that could arise from a conflict between lawmakers and the Supreme Court Chief Justice.
The lawmakers are trying to impeach Chief Justice Hilario Davide on allegations of misusing government funds.
President Arroyo said she had consulted with Davide, the leader of the House of Representatives, where the impeachment complaint emanated, and business tycoon Eduardo Cojuangco, who heads a political party to which lawmakers pushing the impeachment belong.
She also took the controversial step of attending a Catholic mass outside the Supreme Court on Monday morning in support of Davide.
Supporters, including former Filipino President Corazon Aquino, plan to gather at the House of Representatives, where an effort is underway to convince lawmakers to withdraw their signatures and end the impeachment complaint.
Some have warned that if the complaint against Davide progresses, it could bring the powerful Congress and the judiciary to a dangerous collision.
Lawmakers at the House of Representatives have collected enough signatures to bring their impeachment complaint, possibly on Monday, to the Senate for what could be the first-ever impeachment trial of a Supreme Court Justice.
The complaint against Davide alleges that he misappropriated funds by using about 762 million (m) pesos (US$13.9 million) from the country's judiciary development fund intended for allowances to judges and judiciary personnel to buy luxury cars and build two holiday homes for Supreme Court judges.
Three years ago, it was Davide who headed the first-ever impeachment trial of a Philippine president, Joseph Estrada, on corruption allegations.
