(22 Sep 1999) Natural Sound As international peacekeeping forces arrive in East Timor, the hills in Liquisa are ablaze as houses are set on fire by retreating pro-Indonesian militias. The militias are evidently destroying everything they can before being forced to leave. Liquisa is a well known base of the P-M-B - a ruthless pro-Jakarta militia group. As the militias retreat, residents are returning to the capital, Dili. They are leaving makeshift refugee camps in the hills after international peacekeepers secured the city. But there's almost no water and no electricity. Windows are smashed and most buildings burned down after the wave of terror by pro-Indonesian militias. Thousands of hungry refugees looted Indonesian-owned warehouses. They managed to take hundreds of bags of food before peacekeepers forced them out. International troops continue to pour into the province, but commander Peter Cosgrove has warned that the rest of East Timor won't be under full control for some weeks.
