(1 Sep 1994) A Cambodian government official said on Thursday (1/9) that three Westerners held hostage by the Khmer Rouge for more than a month were still alive despite the passing of a deadline to meet their captors' demands. Information Ministry secretary Khieu Kanharith said they were last seen on Tuesday (30/8), the day the deadline expired, and contacts with the guerrillas were continuing. Kanharith said appeals by King Norodom Sihanouk and Queen Monique for the release of Briton Mark Slater, 28, Australian David Wilson, 29, and Frenchman Jean Michel Braquet, 27, had helped in the negotiations.
