There was some serious ocean commotion in Laguna Beach, California last night! The fluke flapping started around sunset when 4 groups of mother and baby gray whales appeared and put on the spectacular spout spitting water show! I was down at the beach as this all started happening but did not have my gopro hero 4 or my canon dslr on me (very rare) Fortunately, I was still able to capture this whale week news update live at the scene thanks to my iPhone 6 plus camera and was able to post and share the news story via YouTube Capture!
Now here are some more facts on how Pacific Gray Whales Feed - According to Wiki, the gray whales feed mainly on benthic crustaceans. The whales feed by turning on its side (usually the right, resulting in loss of eyesight in the right eye for many older whales) and scooping up sediments from the sea floor. The pacific gray whales are classified as a baleen whale and have baleen, which acts like a sieve, to scoop up amphipods along with sand, rock, and water. Mostly, the whales feed in the northern waters of the pacific ocean during summer months; and only feed opportunistically during its migration. The gray whales depend primarily on their extensive fat reserves. Calf gray whales drink 190–300 US gal (720–1,140 l) of their mothers' 53% fat milk per day!
I love the gray whales so much, and I always have. I can remember the feeling of excitement from seeing the whales all the way back to when I was a young boy. It is my dream to make films that will be used to help educate and inspire others to feel the same way about the whales. I want to help teach everyone how to respect, preserve, and protect these magnificent ocean animals! All of these things mentioned start with recognition and that is where I really need your help!
