www.EnglishGrammarHelp.com - CLAUSES verses PHRASES - CLAUSES are easy to understand if you remember one simple rule: a CLAUSE contains BOTH a SUBJECT and a VERB, but a PHRASE contains either a SUBJECT or a VERB but not both. A CLAUSE can be either an independent clause or dependent clause. An independent clause is a clause that makes sense because it expresses a complete thought. Independent clauses can stand alone. Independent clauses can be sentences if they begin with a capital letter and end with some type of terminal or end punctuation: a period, question mark, or exclamation mark. Dependent clauses contain a subject and a verb but they do not express a complete thought and are used to modify an independent clause. Dependent clauses are joined to independent clauses by a subordinate conjunction, words like because, since, if, and although.
