Like A Bushfire – Namibia – South Afrika - 2000 (Eng)

 

The title "Like A Bushfire" is a quote from President Sam Nujoma of Namibia. He compares the speed at which the AIDS epidemic spread in the sparsely populated country with the speed of a bushfire. Namibia has not been developing that far in the fight against AIDS as South Africa where the film begins and ends. South Africa has the world's fastest spread of HIV Aids. In the film we meet in addition to the President and Minister of Health, a rape victim, a cab-owner, doctors, AIDS researchers, an economist, HIV-positive, a priest and orphans collectively paint a picture of Namibia and South Africa's bleak prospects. The movie though does come with suggestions for solutions, leaving a glimmer of hope. Before that it describes the pharmaceutical industry and the international community's responsibility.
