After the election, the two men speak in a phone call on the evening of November 8. The main point of interest here is that Johnson explicitly brings up the fact that people on Nixon's team (he does not accuse Nixon himself) had a backchannel to sabotage the Paris Peace Talks. "Now, that's the story, Dick. And it is a sordid story," says Johnson to Nixon. "Now, I don't want to say that to the country because that's not good." Another crucial detail has to do with the allegation that Johnson's bombing halt, which lay the ground for the peace talks, was a political maneuver to elect Democrat Hubert Humphrey; even after the election, Johnson still wants to bring about the peace talks, and he wants Nixon's help to do so. The urgent issue for Johnson is the unending loss of American soldiers overseas: "They're killing Americans everyday."
