Want to experience Mental Practice? Skip ahead to: 1:11
"When I sit in Paris in a cafe, surrounded by people, I don't sit casually- I go over a certain sonata in my head and discover new things all the time" - Arthur Rubinstein, pianist.
Mental Practice has been used for athletes to help improve their athletic craft and performance but it can also be used for musicians. We're not that different from them!
Anyone of any skill level can practice mentally. It's all about imagining yourself practicing (or performing) as vividly as possible. Use all your senses - hear your notes, feel your fingers, feel how your body moves. Make the experience as real as possible.
Mental practice should be used to aid physical practice. It should also be structured like a real practice session. Start with small sessions and slowly build your way up. One day, you might be able to learn a whole piece while you ride a train!
Happy Practicing!
Michelle
