Local racer Jeff Ellison crashed tremendously during a local heat on July 17, 1993 at Salem Speedway. The guardrailing in turn 3 was ruptured and Ellison's car was basically split in half. He suffered only minor injuries. This led to the delay of the ASA Salem 200, and the reconstruction of the turn 3 guardrail.
