The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel carries the Hampton Roads Beltway (Interstate 64) over and beneath Hampton Roads Harbor between the cities of Hampton and Norfolk. The nearby Norfolk Naval Station had a significant influence in the crossing's design - it's 3.5 mile total length instead features a 7,479 ft. tunnel beneath the center navigation channel that also travels up to 108 ft. below the surface. The first span opened in 1957, with its near-identical twin span opening in 1976. Civil War Highlights: Fort Monroe, Fort Wool
