Winter Storm Pax, which is bringing snow to the East Coast a day after sleet, snow and ice bombarded the South, has made travel treacherous and slow in as many as 22 states.
By Thursday morning, more than 5,000 domestic and international flights were canceled by Thursday morning, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware.com., as Pax advanced up the Interstate 95 corridor to the winter-weary Mid-Atlantic states. The majority of cancelations were out of Atlanta, Philadelphia, Washington and New York area airports.
Once the storm lets up, it could take days before the airlines can get all crew and aircraft back into position.
Airline customers should check their flight status with airlines before departing for the airport. Many airlines are offering flexible, no-fee changes to travel dates.
In Georgia, state troopers said they worked more than 200 crashes. Snow was forecast to stop falling and temperatures to rise in most of the state, but ice remained a concern, with refreezing possible overnight and into Friday.
The travel hang ups also affected rail commutes Thursday. Amtrak canceled some of its trains and modified the schedules for others because of the winter storm that's battering the Northeast and the South.
