SUCTION
First, Pressure washing is necessary to clean the walls. How clean? Clean enough to eat off.
Most don't understand what porous walls mean; that means like a cement block or brick wall, when wet from rainwater or water from any garden hose will absorb in it.
The idea is that a new stucco finish will now adhere by suction. However, one must now keep that wall moist; not dripping wet or the stucco won’t adhere, but just moist using a garden hose.
I suggest a “bonding agent" after the wall is cleaned well for those who aren't sure what that means.
Why did grout lines show through concrete retaining blocks when stucco was applied?
Excellent question; glad you asked. The stucco was brushed on or was much too thin.
Not nearly thick enough, plus when this finish coat is applied more than an eighth of an inch thick as filling the grout, that will also be thicker in the grout lines as finish coats are not designed to be applied thicker than an eighth inch.
So the one-quarter to half an inch that goes into the ground lines will be noticeable in many ways.
But on another level, that looks cool to me. So many here in the USA go for perfection, whereas in the UK, they go for old-world charm and really aged looks.
Most of those folks would love this look. The only thing missing would be an inch of green moss on the tops of the walls.
