Moench] is the dietary staple of more than 500 million people in over 90 countries, primarily in the developing world (Reddy et al 2010). Worldwide, it is grown on about 41 m ha, of which about 9 m ha are cultivated in Asia; of which the largest area is in India (7.8 m ha) with a production of 7.2 m t (FAOSTAT 2012). Different types of sorghum are recognized based on relative height and grain productivity and with or without sugars in the stem.
