Dr. Ramos-Horta has been the United Nations' Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea-Bissau since January 2, 2012. Prior to this posting, he was the President of Timor-Leste from 2007-2012, served as Prime Minister from 2006-2007, and as Foreign Minister from 2001-2006. Dr. Ramos-Horta is known for his work to promote peace in conflict-torn countries. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996 for his work to achieve a just and peaceful solution to the Timor-Leste conflict. He helped bring about Timor-Leste's independence from Indonesia and transition from UN stewardship to a democracy. The Sumitro Djojohadikusumo Banyan Tree Leadership Forum is known as the premier forum for Southeast Asian and U.S. leaders including heads of state, ministers, and other policy leaders to address key issues of the day.
