Magnetic field and waterIt is known that water is a diamagnetic material and its properties should not depend on the effect of a magnetic field.However, the studies of Japanese professor Hideaki Inaba from Chiba University, demonstrated that on the contrary, the influence of a strong magnetic field changes the most important physical properties of water. So under the influence of a magnetic field of 6 tesla, the melting temperature of ordinary ice increases by 5.6 millikelvins and of heavy water ice by 21.8 millikelvins. Heavy water ice is frozen water, in which the hydrogen atoms are replaced by deuterium.Later it was found that there is a dependence between the melting temperature and the strength of the magnetic field, applied to the sample. Professor Hideaki considers that the thermal motion of partially charged atoms in water, when exposed to a magnetic field, results in the appearance of the Lorentz force. By suppressing the thermal motion, the Lorentz force makes the hydrogen bonds stronger, at the same time, the melting temperature also increases.Further research in this area is aimed to find out the effect of a magnetic field on a phase transition in such materials as gallium, indium, mercury and benzene.
