Numerous high-performance versions were built. Designed at a time when total vehicle weight and maiximum fuel mileage were not major issues, more was better or in this case stronger. The toploader's gear case and tailhousing were made of heavy cast iron, and each gear and shaft on average 15 percent larger than nesessary. Some rare race-bred Toploaders installed behind 428 Cobra Jet engines were outfitted with cast-aluminimum tailhousings in an afford to save weight.
